I'm looking for discrete power on/off codes for a SA 3250HD cable box.
Anyone know of a source?

Consider just leaving it on. The power consumption difference between on and standby is very minimal.

Thanks, so far I am leaving it on. The reason for wanting the on/off codes is because in the past TimeWarner has told me that they occasionally need the box to be off to upgrade the software (or maybe they meant to say firmware). Before I got the 3250 the old box would on occasion fail to work some mornings and by powering it down, waiting 5 minutes then powering up all would be fine again so I suspected there must be some truth to their request to turn it off each night.
I'll just leave it on for now and see how it goes.

They can send the updates regardless of whether the box is on or off. Really, it is on all the time. The on button just turns off and on the video and audio outs, which is why the power it uses really doesn't change much regardless.

When they send the updates, the box will reboot. When it comes back up it'll be in the off state, regardless of how it was before the update.

I leave mine on all the time. I also set a timer (one of the options in the box) to turn it on at 7:45PM every day, just in case it reboots so that it will turn back on by itself if I don't see that it is off.

I have that box too and it has been on for almost a year straight now. But power outages are killing me since the box doesn't turn back on. So I am going with a UPS for them. Drives me crazy when the RTV thinks the cable boxes are on and records a show I want to watch with the cable box turned off.

Had no idea there was a menu setting to automatically turn it on at a preset time. I'll have to check that out.

Yes, I set a daily timer to turn it (back) on, *and* keep it on a UPS, for exactly the same reason you describe. Just the UPS alone won't do it, because sometimes the box reboots, either due to a software error or because the cable company updates it. After the reboot, it turns off.

Since there are no discrete codes for SA boxes, how do you turn it "on" from the timer? Aren't you just as likely to turn it off? There must be some trick I don't understand.

The timer is internal to the box. Go into the settings and you can have it turn on each day at the same time, and even turn on to a particular channel.

Okay, so I just rememberd to look through the menu and find the auto on feature. Am I correct in assuming that it is -timer - wake up that I am looking for? And am I safe to assume that at that time it will turn on and then tune to the channel that I select? That means that if I am recording, it will change the channel?

I set the internal timer on the box for 7:45PM, weekdays, default channel (last channel tuned).

If it is off at 7:45, it turns on without changing the channel. Otherwise, nothing happens.

Interestingly, there isn't a way to make it do this every day, weekdays and weekends. It makes you choose either one, but not both. So, I'm covered five days out of seven.

Sean, sorry to be a bonehead. Am I right in using the:

Timer: Wake-Up

preference from the menu? That is the only one that looks remotely right to me. Or am I missing something? I don't have the option for weekdays or default channel in mine, so I am thinking I am not in the right place. The Timer: Wake-Up only asks for channel and time. Thanks again for the help.

That's it. I don't have a Weekend/Weekday option either.

On mine it is located in the Quick settings menu under Timers -> Power-On Timer -> On -> Last Channel -> Wkdays -> 7:45p

Sorry if this doesn't help too much. The cable company has the ability to customize the user interface, so my menus are probably slightly different than yours.
