Review: | I've only had this remote for a few weeks, so maybe I don't get it yet. But, my initial impression is that this remote is terrible.
First, and no fault of the remote, but I've only gotten it to work with the ATI Media Center software and, quite frankly, this software sucks. The Media Library is a joke and the DVD player is notoriously buggy. Check out chat forums, such as avsforum.com and you'll see that others agree.
Second, there are dedicated keys for TV, DVD, Web, and Media Library. TV and DVD I can understand, but what do you need a dedicated key for Web? You can't type with this remote, so what's the point? I don't think I've ever surfed the web without at least typing in an URL from time to time. If I'm going to have to reach for the keyboard, then I might as well grab my mouse too, so why do I need to use the remote? And why a button for Media Library? Once open it, you can't really do anything with it using the remote. I would have prefered they give me a dedicated button for the File Player. At least then I could use the remote to play, stop, etc.
Third, regarding the programmable buttons, what's the deal with having the option to select either "One set for all features" or "Specific to the currently active feature"? I don't get it. In order for either to work, I have to have the feature active, so why not always select "Specific to the currently active feature"? What's the benefit of "One set for all features"? |

Review: | Dino is correct in that it will work with the basic functions of PowerDVD and even MusicMatch Jukebox if you have the correct window selected, etc. But other than play, pause, stop, etc, you cannot call up the settings window, music library, etc. The DVD button cannot be programmed to start PowerDVD rather than the ATI software. You have to use the built-in mouse function to click your way through.
Of the 42 buttons on the remote only 6 are programmable and they are marked A-F and are not even grouped together. This hardly makes for a remote that can be used the wife and kids in a demanding multi-application Home Theater application.
After talking to the tech support folks at ATI, they confirmed that the customization options are very limited when compared to other PC based remotes.
I don't want to seem like I'm beating on ATI (I'm a big fan and use a lot of their stuff). But PC remotes are all about customizing to work with different apps.
There is talk of MAX10 supporting this remote in the future, and if so it would be a great combination. In the interim buy a Remote Mouse from X10 and use the MAX10 driver. For the same price it provides IR and X10 in addition to the RF. |
