Some details about Remote Central's new server at ipHouse.

Remote Central is now settled in our new dedicated server at
ipHouse.com. We’ve been with ipHouse since before they even launched in 2004 – and by that I mean we’ve had the same great people looking after our site since way back in 2001! If you need a co-located, dedicated or fully managed server, I highly recommend you check ipHouse out. We’ve had 8 years of great service and plan on many more!
As some readers have already noted, Remote Central should be feeling somewhat faster. And that’s because our new server is so much more powerful than our previous one – it’s even more Earth-friendly by making use of special low voltage CPUs, power saving 2.5” hard drives, and high efficiency power supplies.
Take a gander at the specs, and you’ll see why I like to call it the “octa” system:
Old Server (2003)
CPU: | 2 x Intel Xeon 2.66GHz 533MHz system bus Total 2 cores @ 2.66GHz |
Memory: | 2GB DDR 266MHz |
Hard Drives: | 1 x 18GB 3.5” 15K RPM SCSI 2 x 36GB 3.5” 15K RPM SCSI (RAID1) Total 54GB usable |
New Server
CPU: | 2 x Intel Xeon L5420 2.5GHz Quad Core 1333MHz system bus Total 8 cores @ 2.5GHz |
Memory: | 8GB DDR2 667MHz |
Hard Drives: | 8 x 73GB 2.5” 15K RPM SAS (RAID6) Total 438GB usable |
My benchmarks have so far shown that intensive operations complete in roughly one-third the time – and the new server can handle 8 of those at once instead of 2! This means faster file area browsing, faster searches and simply snappier page loading. This speed will also be useful for the new forum system (currently in testing), which is much closer to going live now that this move is complete.
